Elegant Dimensional Hydrangeas

Elegant Dimensional Hydrangeas

Hi there! Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers! Every summer my mom has some beautiful, blue ones, and I even had blue-violet hydrangeas in my bridal bouquet. Naturally, when Spellbinders asked me if I wanted to craft with their new Hydrangea Dies from The Nature’s Garden Botanical Collection, I immediately said yes!

Before I began diecutting, I watched the video by Susan Tierney-Cockburn, who designed these dies for Spellbinders, to learn how to create the flowers. I mostly followed her example, making some small tweaks of my own.

First, I diecut all of my elements. I used a few shades of blue cardstock for the flowers and diecut each color three times to make sure I had plenty of flowers in each color. I diecut the foliage and flower bases from green cardstock. Before shaping the diecuts, I added Copic shading in similar colors to the flower centers and green dye ink to the leaves to create a bit of dimension.

For my background I used the Fluted Classics Rectangles Dies. I diecut white cardstock with the largest dies from the set and matted that panel onto a patterned paper from my stash. I created a white cardbase that’s a tad larger than A2 size and layered the two rectangles on top. I diecut a second patterned paper with smaller dies from the rectangles set and adhered that panel onto my card.

The vase for my hydrangeas is actually the basket from the Gladiolus Dies (Spellbinders currently only sells these dies as a bundle, but you can find them individually at other online retailers). I trimmed off the basket handle and blended the basket with gray ink for some dimension. After gluing the vase to my card, I attached the large, green flower bases with a double-layer of foam tape just in the center of the bases (I chose to use the foam tape in lieu of the medium flower bases Susan used). I then adhered the smallest base with foam tape to the centers of each base. Next, I glued the flowers to the bases and tucked the leaves underneath. To finish off the flowers, I added small Diamond Dotz to the centers.

My sentiment is from the Yana’s Sentiments Glimmer Hot Foil Plate and Die set. I foiled it with Pewter Glimmer Foil and diecut it with the coordinating die. I popped up my sentiment with foam tape to complete my card.

Hi, Terrie. Diamond Dotz are small, flat-backed gems used in diamond painting. You can usually find them at JoAnn, Michaels and Hobby Lobby. They’re probably also on Amazon.
