Japan-Inspired Cards: Combining Hot Foil and Copics

Hi, friends! I’m back with two more cards featuring Spellbinders’ May releases. This time I’m using some beautiful products from their Spring in Kyoto Collection, a collaboration between Spellbinders and Alex Syberia Designs.

Aren’t those girls beautiful?! They’re from the Kokeshi Dolls BetterPress Plate & Die Set. Because I knew I wanted to color them with Copics, I chose to hotfoil them rather than letterpress. I foiled both dolls with Pewter Glimmer Foil, colored them with Copics, and diecut them with the coordinating dies.

For my first card, I created a background with the Floral Fans 3D Embossing Folder. I embossed coral cardstock with the folder and lightly rubbed a darker coral ink pad across the raised portions. I trimmed down the panel and adhered it to a white cardbase.

To create a focal point for my doll, I diecut several layers with the Essential Stylish Ovals Dies. I added blue ink to the center of the white oval before gluing it to the red oval. I attached the layered diecuts with foam to the vellum piece, which I adhered to my cardfront with liquid adhesive.

After popping up the doll with thin 3D foam squares, I added a sentiment created with the Curved Everyday Sentiments Glimmer Plate & Die set and Gold Glimmer Foil. I finished with a scattering of gold glitter enamel dots.

My second card features the beautiful Cherry Blossoms BetterPress Plate & Die Set as a background. I hotfoiled the cherry blossoms with Opaque White Glimmer Foil onto black cardstock. For a touch of color, I colored in the blooms with colored pencils.

I framed the cherry blossom panel by diecutting white and black cardstocks with the Essential Four Petal Labels Dies. After layering the frames, I attached them to my panel with foam tape and affixed everything to a white cardbase.

I popped up the doll with foam tape and created some floral embellishments with the Four Petal Thank You Dies (retired). I added coordinating ink to the flowers before assembling them and adhered them with a combination of foam and liquid adhesive. My sentiment is from the Kokeshi Dolls BetterPress Plate & Die Set. I finished the card with some clear drops.
